Claude Monet was born in Paris and grew up in Le Havre, where Eugène Boudin encouraged him to paint outdoors. In Paris he studied in Charles Gleyre's studio and met painters including Renoir, Sisley and Bazille. He became a central figure in the Impressionist exhibitions, beginning in 1874. His subjects ranged from coastal scenes and modern transport to gardens and water. Repeated encounters with a place allowed him to explore changing light and atmosphere. The selected works bring together the beach at Sainte-Adresse, a railway station and water lilies, offering a route through different settings and stages of his career.
