This unusual composition, which combines caricature, modernist elements, and portraiture, references a 1944 attempt to assassinate president Manuel Ávila Camacho, who is pictured alongside the revered early leaders Miguel Hidalgo and Benito Júarez. Méndez’s imagery blames the right-wing Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) for the attempt. The print’s political content led to its rejection for a juried print show, causing a scandal in the Mexican artistic community and an increase in Taller de Gráfica Popular membership.
