Hokusai

Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese artist associated with Edo, now Tokyo, whose long career encompassed paintings, illustrated books and designs for woodblock prints. He trained in the Katsukawa studio under Shunshō before developing an independent practice and using several artistic names. His print designs range from people and urban activity to landscapes, plants and animals. The series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji includes Under the Wave off Kanagawa, commonly called The Great Wave. Artline's selection pairs views from that series with flower studies, making it possible to compare distant landscape, changing viewpoints and close observation of small natural subjects.
