About this artwork

August Bouquet — Kálmán Kubinyi. 1937.

Medium: softground etching. Dimensions: Plate: 37.8 x 29.2 cm (14 7/8 x 11 1/2 in.).

Collection record: The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland. Museum connection according to this source; current display unverified.

Kubinyi achieved the various colors of this print through multiple plates, which, combined with his unique method of softground etching, makes this an ambitious work. Its unusual perspective causes the human figures in the lower left to appear much smaller than the vase of flowers that fills most of the work. The artist later used a similar arrangement of large flowers and small figures in other prints, although for a more directly surrealist effect.
