About this artwork
Saraband — Kálmán Kubinyi. 1932.
Medium: color mezzotint. Dimensions: Plate: 27.6 x 19.5 cm (10 7/8 x 7 11/16 in.).
Collection record: The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland. Museum connection according to this source; current display unverified.
This print illustrates Kubinyi’s experimentation with Surrealism, a movement that emphasized dreamlike images and the subconscious. Two figures, one framed in the foreground and one obscured in shadow, stand in swaying dance positions. The soft lines, blank expressions, and diluted colors create a liminal space within the work, obscuring a clear narrative or setting. Kubinyi’s model for both poses was his brother’s wife Eleanora Buchla, who was a noted modern dancer in Cleveland.
