About this artwork
Escape — Kálmán Kubinyi. 1935.
Medium: aquatint and engraving. Dimensions: Plate: 23.5 x 18.5 cm (9 1/4 x 7 5/16 in.).

This dreamlike work combines music, dance, history, and modernity into a surreal collage. The central figure poses with castanets, while the swirling instrument to their left represents a mandolin, a recurring theme in Kubinyi’s work. The airplane gliding overhead and tall structures resembling skyscrapers evoke the Machine Age. Meanwhile, the head of a sculpture may reference antiquity. Combined, they suggest art’s ability to transcend, or escape, the march of time.
