While it is unusual to find a pelican near Lake Erie today and would have been even rarer in the 1920s, it is possible that Edwin Kaufman’s inspiration for this work came from Cleveland. It is also possible that, given he was a student at the Cleveland School of Art at the time, he based this print after a work by his teacher Henry Keller or an image from a book. The tightly framed composition removes the birds from nature and places them within the context of an industrial pier.
